Shiitake Brown Rice Pilaf and Sesame Broccoli

Last night we had a lovely simple meal of Shiitake Brown Rice Pilaf (Re-Bar Modern Food Cookbook by Audrey Alsterberg and Wanda Urbanowicz) and Sesame Broccoli (Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers by the Moosewood Collective).

The pilaf was rich with minced shiitake mushrooms, leeks, garlic and almonds (recipe was for roasted pecans).  The Sesame broccoli was very simple, just steamed with a dressing of brown rice vinegar, dark sesame oil, red pepper flakes (we added these on the plate so it would not be spicy for Elise) and salt.

We ended up mixing the two together on the plate.  So for a one pot dish, the broccoli could have been added to the pilaf and the very end, with the dressing stirred in before serving.

Re-Bar is a delightful restaurant in Victoria, BC.  Every dish is so appealing I always have a hard time deciding what to have when I’m there.  My parents in law gave me the book years agao.  It is packed full of wonderful recipes.  Some of them involve a lot of ingredients and sometimes specialty ingredients so you need to plan ahead to make sure you have what you need for the recipes.  But the one we used last night was very simple.

Yum Yum!
